Three Flags

The Latin motto means "Out of Many One" and is present on the Great U.S. Seal. This image came to me during my first summer in California, as I was walking past some offices in El Cerrito. One of them displayed by its door a generously sized American flag flapping in the wind. It was low enough that I could touch it and big enough to richly drape around several people. I think of it three dimensionally with many rows following. It is published by Child Graphics Company. www.childgraphics.com

This flag version followed and was also published by Child Graphics. In fact it was Bea and Denny Harmon, the company owners, who -- after embracing E Pluribus Unum -- kindly suggested that I work on another flag based on some thoughts I had mentioned, namely that "We all have a place under the stars". It too is still in print and available through their website.

This flag came third. It is shimmering and supposed to be accompanied by music. In it the stars become winged and the people rise to reach them, like a song that uplifts us, like the smoke of a candle, like birds becoming angels and angels turning to stars. While not published yet, it is waiting and wanted to be seen in a triptic formation with the other two.
